What tips do you have on saving money on motels and hotels when traveling?

1. Try International Hostels Plan plan and do the research of the area you are visiting. Get traveler cheques not cash or use major credit card to convert at the destination if it is a short stay. Stay in Hostels Eat in Hospital cafeterias the food is general gr8 and dirt cheap sometime University and college dorms are available to stay at but you will find the food is cheaper at hospitals -travel with people you know and trust get a cici international telephone card ..even a call from Mexico on this card is only pennies a minute don't buy anything less than a $10 card If in North America Use the Flying J , Petro, Oasis, 76, and Pilot truck stops for showers between $6 and $10, get an extra towel and your friend can shower as well. That way you have a a family or group showering for as a little as a couple of doollars, [ you cann't get a starbucks for that you can always crash watching TV at Flying J or park in front of the cashier's window between the entrance and the gas pumps..it is much safer than a rest area.
2. Look on websites such as wotif.com and lastminute.com for good hotel deals. Even a search on the internet for "cheap hotels in ______" should get you some advice! Also, try travel forums such as TripAdvisor.com. Or ask on this webpage for recommendations for a specific city.
