When traveling without reservations, is there a better time of day to check-in motels, for the best price.?

1. Try after 10:00PM. Cruise the parking lot in order to get an idea of how well occupied the motel is and use the percentage of many rooms are not occupied as the basis for your negotiations..It's not exactly the perfect formula But on many occasions I have told the desk clerk that since his motel was only 50% occupied and that it wasn't going to get any more so that I would offer him 50 % of the going rate or go elsewhere.This tactic works really well when there are 3+ motels in the same area I do have to warn you that this tactic may not make you friends with the desk clerk But if you have any negtiating skills at all it will work.
